A green screen is a backdrop used in chromakey photography, which is a process in that replaces a solid background (often green) from a video or photo and replaces it with a new background. Green screen is often used in movies, making it look like characters are in a setting in which they are not.
You're probably most familiar with green screens from watching the meteorologist on the news. There's not REALLY a weather map behind him/her - it's a green screen! Here's a clip that shows a meteorologist explaining how the green screen works...
Here's a YouTube tutorial for the app we'll be using in Tech Club. It's called Green Screen by Do Ink.
Once you have the hang of the basics of Do Ink, you can explore some of the more advanced features. Take a look at what these middle school students did to remake a fairy tale using the green screen.
Hmmm...if you're feeling really ambitious, you might want to try combining Stop Motion AND Green Screen to come up with some truly unique videos!
Green Screen Projects
In Tech Club, our learning goes beyond our meetings. We've introduced this new concept to you, introduced you to the tools and how they work, and given you time to explore. However, to become proficient with this art you'll need to keep working on it! Earn Tech-spert points by completing the following projects over the next month and be ready to share at our next meeting.
Take a CREATIVE picture of someone using a photo background
Create a 30 second video with a photo or video background using a green screen
Don't forget to use a story board to plan your story first. Make your video more interesting by creating a custom setting that goes along with your story. When your projects are finished, post them to our Tech Club Google classroom.
